Sales Boosting Performance: Is A Supercharger or Turbocharger Better
Posted by carsandtrucks on Saturday, February 21 @ 13:08:56 PST

From the beginning of automobile manufacturing, there has always been someone looking for a way to boost the performance and power from the engine. The most obvious way to gain performance is to build a bigger engine. The problem is bigger means more weight, and more expense. A better way to improve the performance output of your car or trucks engine is to push more air into the engines combustion chamber. By increasing the amount of air, the engine can accept more fuel. The combination of more air and fuel means a more powerful combustion that generates more horsepower. So how do you get more air in to the combustion chamber? The increase in air is

generated by a supercharger or turbocharger. Both of these components pressurize the air in the intake manifold to above atmospheric pressure. The difference in a supercharger and a turbocharger are how they are driven. The turbocharger is driven by exhaust gases while the super charger is mechanically driven by a belt. You may ask why not just put more fuel in to the combustion process to gain performance. A gasoline internal combustion engine runs efficiently on 14 parts of air to 1 part of fuel. Without metering the 14-1 ratio the performance will suffer. A supercharger can increase the horsepower output of your engine by 40% or more. Either a supercharger or a turbocharger can be added to your car or trucks current engine. The supercharger is generally less complicated to install. If you add a supercharger, you will want to make sure your engine is strong enough to handle it. Remember that the increase of performance is coming from more horsepower that is created by a more intense explosion in the combustion chamber. Adding a supercharger or turbocharger to your car or truck is not a simple task. You definitely want to do some homework and get a clear understanding of what you are buying before you commit to a purchase. If you are not an experienced mechanic, don't take this project on yourself. If you are looking to put some excitement into driving your car or truck through greater performance, then look into the possibilities of adding a supercharger.
