The GPS system works off of 24 strategically orbiting satellites. The initial intent of the GPS was for defense purposes, but in the 1980’s the system was made available for civilian use. The GPS works 24/7 and is free to all users. So what does this mean for your car or truck? It means you never have to look at a map again. It means you never have to admit to your wife that you are lost. All you need to do to take advantage of this wonderful piece of technology is decide which device is best suited for you. The top three names in GPS devices for your car or truck are Tom Tom, Garmin, and Magellen. These devices have an introductory model that starts a little north of $200.00 and increase in price as they increase in features. I have used GPS devices manufactured by all three and find the Garmin to be my unit of choice. I like the simplicity of operation and its huge data bank of available information. Programmed into these devices are the locations of gas stations, restaurants, points of interest and a host of other information designed to make your road trip a little smoother. You can get traffic updates announced through your unit. There is generally a subscription fee with this feature. Bluetooth is available on some units allowing you to go hands free with your cell phone. The list goes on and on for features that are available with these things. Your choice will be made by what you want and how much you want to spend. Some devices are hard wired into our vehicle and others are portable. I recommend that you buy a portable system that can be removed from your vehicle and locked away safely when you have to leave your vehicle unattended. A GPS can be purchased at Big Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart and other big box stores. Of course, you can buy online or from your local car dealer.
