To perform your own maintenance or repairs to your car or truck, you will need some tools. My recommendation is that you buy the right tools but don’t go overboard. A professional automobile technician buys the best tools available because he/she makes a living using them. You on the other hand, are going to use your tools occasionally. When shopping for hand tools stick with brand names like Craftsman or Napa brand. These tools are a fair value and come with a lifetime guarantee that will replace the tool should it break. in your arsenal is the repair manual. Working on your car or truck without a repair manual is akin to baking a cake without a recipe. Repair manuals are available through your local parts store, bookstore, or on line. Personally I like the on line All Data manuals. Next in line of do it yourself tools is lifting equipment and support stands. Even a simple oil change requires you to get under the vehicle. Be sure the jack and support stands are in good working condition and are rated for the job at hand. Some of the jobs you can do yourself will require special tools. That is, tools designed for the sole purpose of completing a specific repair. Don’t substitute these tools with something you “modified” from your tool collection. Doing so usually causes damage and results in greater expense. I find a certain satisfaction in working on my own car. If you are properly equipped, you too can find things that you can do to your vehicle that will save you a little money and give you the opportunity to get a little dirty.
