This 10 minute service and twenty dollar part is often neglected, resulting in poor engine performance and loss of fuel economy. In the good old days the service station attendant would check your air filter when you stopped in for gas. Today, you either check it yourself or hope your service shop does it for you. If you are not inclined to check it yourself, make sure you ask your shop to check it. The rule of thumb for replacing an air filter is once per year, or if you can’t remember when it was done it is probably overdue. This quick service will
pay dividends in saved fuel.
If you want to do this service yourself, locate the air intake (it is the big round tube under the hood.) and follow it to the air filter box. The air filter will be found in a 2 piece round or square housing. Simply unsnap the clips holding the two pieces together. The filter will look like folded paper surrounded in rubber. Pay attention to how the filter sits in the housing, remove the old filter, install the new filter, and refasten the clamps. This simple solution to vehicle maintenance will save you money at the gas pumps, and improve your car or trucks performance.
