Service Automatic Transmission Service: Common Problems & Maintenance Tips
Posted by carsandtrucks on Wednesday, January 02 @ 04:06:25 PST

Repairs to an automatic transmission are never cheap. The complexity of the workings of an automatic transmission requires that only a trained professional perform any internal transmission repairs. The most common cause of automatic transmission failure is overheating the transmission. Overheating of the transmission will occur if the vehicle is stuck in mud or snow, is used in towing, racing the vehicle or when the vehicle is subjected to lots of start and stop driving. To help prevent expensive repairs you should inspect the level and condition of the transmission fluid on a regular basis. Most vehicles are equipped with

a transmission dipstick. If your transmission does not have a dip stick then you should request your dealer inspect your fluid. If you have a dipstick, check the fluid with the engine running, and the transmission lever in the park position. Clean, serviceable transmission fluid is red. If the fluid in your transmission is brown and smells burnt have the transmission serviced. A proper transmission service will pump out the oxidized transmission fluid as well as add a cleaning chemical and fresh transmission fluid. Not all transmission fluid is the same, so be sure the service shop knows which fluid is required for your vehicle. The general rule of thumb for a transmission service interval is every 30000 miles. You can expect to pay $150.00-$175.00 for a thorough automatic transmission service. This is about 10 times less then what you can expect for the starting price should your transmission fail.
