Service Gas Mileage: Tips To Lower Fuel Cost
Posted by carsandtrucks on Tuesday, November 27 @ 07:58:14 PST

As I write this article the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States is $3.11 per gallon. The general consensus among analysts is we will never see prices below $3.00 per gallon again. So as the gas pump sucks all of your disposable cash out of your wallet, it is important that you find ways to fight back. I have listed 8 tips that will help you lower your fuel cost.

1. Maintain Your Vehicle: Regularly change your air cleaner, spark plugs, and fuel filters. Add fuel injection cleaner to the tank every 10,000 miles. A properly running vehicle will increase fuel mileage significantly.

2. Use the Recommended Grade of Motor Oil: To decrease friction that robs your vehicle of performance and fuel mileage make sure you use the oil as recommended by your vehicle manufacturers.

3. Properly Inflate Tires: Check and correct tire pressure monthly. Proper tire inflation increases fuel economy by as much as 6%.

4. Slow Down: Fuel economy decreases about 1% for every MPH over 55. So if you drive 75 MPH instead of 55 MPH you decreased fuel economy by 20%

5. Use Cruise Control: Cruise control helps maintain a constant speed reducing fuel consumption.

6. Avoid Rush Hour: Stop and go traffic burns more fuel. Try to avoid rush hour by leaving early or staying a little late.

7. Gadgets, Don't Buy Them: As gas prices rise there is always someone with a gadget that will increase gas mileage. These simply do not work. If there was a simple widget that would increase fuel mileage you can be sure the manufacturer would be using them.

8. Clean Out Your Vehicle: Unnecessary weight lowers fuel economy. Snow piled on the roof and hood creates wind resistance that lowers fuel mileage. So does that car top luggage carrier. If you are not using your carrier remove it from the vehicle.

We all have to find ways to conserve fuel. Once the suppliers realize that their product is not in as high demand then the price will start to come down. It will take all of us to make a difference.
